Methods of Separations & Questions

Filtration

(click on image to have a clearer view)

Filtration can remove insoluble material from water as long as the pores in the filter paper are smaller than the particles of the suspended substance.

Question:
1) How do we separate sand in a mixture? &
2) Solids that can't dissolve in water
Use filtration. It will be able to remove the sand/solid from the water easily.

Magnetic Attraction

Magnetism, is the force of attraction or repulsion between various substances, especially those made of iron and certain other metals; ultimately it is due to the motion of electric charges.

Question:
3)How do we separate iron related materials from a mixture?
Since iron is a magneic material, it can be removed from the mixture using a magnet.

Separating funnel

The separating funnel is used to separate two liquids that usually are very hard to separate, for example, oil and water(different densities).

Question:
4) Separate Immisible Liquids
If they have different densities, a separating funnel will do.

Simple Distillation

Simple distillation is separating two liquids from each other. This can be done if the two boiling point of the substance are different. Since the liquids will have different vapor pressures, one of them will evaporate before the other does.

Question:
5) Separate Miscible Liquids
If they have different boiling points, it can be separated by distillation.

Fractional Distillation

(an example of fractional distillation of ethanol & water)

Fractional distillation can be used to separate a mixture of compound so that each part of the mixture can be removed from the other chemicals.

It is a special type of distillation. Generally the component parts boil at less than 25°C from each other under a pressure of one atmosphere. If the difference in boiling points is greater than 25°C, a simple distillation is used.

Question:

6)Separating Air and Petroleum

Since both chemical has different boiling rates, it can be separated by the fractional distillation.

Crystalisation

Crystallisation is a process of formation of solid crystals precipaitating from a solution, melt or more rarely desposited directly from a gas.

Crystallisation is also a chemical solid-liquid separation technique, in which mass transfer of a solute from the liquid solution to a pure solid crystalline phase occurs.

Question:
7) Separate the solids that can be dissolved in liquid
Crystallisation can be used here.
